Sent to Pet Experts August 14, 2007 7:40 a.m.

Is it necessary to treat kennel cough with antibiotics? If so which kind? My dog is 1 year old and just was at the kennel for a week. She is coughing and making choking noises. I read that kennel cough will resolve itself in 1-3 weeks unless complications occur. I also read the symptoms can be lessened with antibiotics, but I don't know which ones. I would rather her be comfortable while she is sick.

Hi Dawn,

Kennel cough will usually resolve on it's own in about three weeks. Sometimes vets do script antibiotics to prevent secondary infections. Doxycyline is the most common one used.

You can also use robitussin to give her relief.

Feed her soft food so she will keep eating. Boiled chicken or hamburger or cottage cheese should be motivating to her.

Add unflavored pedialyte to her water to keep her hydrated and balance he electrolytes.

Please let me know how your baby is feeling. If you have further questions, I will be here for you.

I hope she feels better very soon.

Sincerest best wishes,

Terri
