Kennel Cough
Sent to Pet Experts October 07 02:01 PM

What are the symtoms of Kennel Cough and is there an inexpensive remedy? We are on a tight budget and a vet bill and prescription for 2 eight month old Malamute mix puppies is just not in it, but with cold weather at our heels I don’t want this cough they have to get worse. Please help.

We took both of them in to a Walk-in Vaccination Clinic a little over a month ago. Then we returned 4 days later to have our male neutered. He got this cough within a couple of weeks and now our female has it as well. I don't know what he was exposed to at the clinic. I also work at a dog boarding/grooming facility and have taken them with me a number of times but this cough only showed up after the vet visits. I haven't taken them to work with me since the day before the vaccinations. I was trying to take precautions...

The problem with Kennel Cough is that it is highly contagious, so if your dogs have it, you want to keep them away from other dogs.
The major complaint is the chronic cough. You can use two things, pediatric robitussin (cough only) and Homeopet Cough blend. The homeopet you can call around for a petstore or vet office that carries it, it is over the counter. Robitussin is at a pharmacy.
Now, both of these things help decrease the coughing with Kennel cough dogs, but occasionally the cough develops into a bacterial infection and eventually pneumonia.
SO>>>as long as dogs are acting/eating normally you can try the above treatment. If your dogs slow down, stop eating, and/or become lethargic, a vet check is needed.
Good Luck,
