Cough and throat clearing in my english setter

Sent to Pet Experts February 16 09:14 PM

My english setter seems okay but has a cough or throat clearing bout at times during the day with a few gags where he spits up some food, other than this cough he has normal behavior. Any ideas or medicines he could take? Thanks

Reply to ZooCVT's Post: Thanks, He's 11 years old, has never been boarded or around other dogs. It's been going on for a few weeks. The food he gags up is very digested and very small amount. It happens during the day and is not associated with feeding. He sleeps well through the night.

Thanks,
Tom

That would be my first suggestion. To have him tested for heartworm. Signs of a heartworm positive dog include coughing/gagging so I would have your vet test for that and also do a blood panel and see if his white count is elevated. He may need antibiotic's if it is. Let me know if you have any other questions.
