My year & a half golden has been recently dx'd with colitis.
Is this a common ailment in this breed & what steps can be taken to keep him healthy?

Often this is connected to a food intolerance.

I would suggest trying a swap to a food such as Wellness or Eagle fish, duck, rabbit, venison etc and no commercial treats and maybe even a swap to a heartworm med with no beef in it to see if that helps.
You may also find adding extra plain canned pumpkin or cooked sweet potato to her meals for the fiber will help.
Allergies do show up in goldens as do thyroid problems and both are partly implicated in this problem.
Hope this helps you!

Here are some addional facts that may help you help us help Sam. When he has nothing left in his belly to throw up, he vomits mucous & blood. Our vet has rx'd Flagl (500 mgs 3 x a day) & Pepcid AC twice a day. Last nite, he vomited a small amt of rx canned food i/d & the meds. This morning he has held down a small amt of the i/d & a Pepcid AC. I need to know if the meds are the right course to take & if there are any commercial foods that will be kind to his overworked belly. We also have a Black Lab with a voracious appetite, so it's a keeping their foods separated & so on! Any help is appreciated. Thank you. Jan Langlois

Thank you for all your suggestions, Nancy. I appreciate your knowledge & expertise.
I will look into the brand foods that you suggested & also ask my vet about the helicobacter infection possibility.
Again, many thanks. Jan Langlois
