Question

Cocker has colon problem.

Sent to Pet Experts August 10, 2005 7:06 p.m.

We took Sadie, who is only 1 1/2 years old, to the Vet after she had a bout with vomiting and diarreha, then dicarded quite alot of bright red blood. The Vet ruled out any worms and did blood work, which all came back fine. She is current on all her shots and is on heartworm and flea prevention meds. The Vet decided to give her an antibiotic, clavamox, thinking that it was possibly a colon infection, she took that for 10 days, and we gradually put her back on her regular diet. She seemed to be doing fine. Now 2 weeks later she started up again, vomiting, slimey stools, then a few drops of bright red blood again. I took her off her Iams dog food again and am now giving her a bland diet of boiled hamburger, rice and egg. Her stools are still not normal, they are formed but very dark in color, almost black. After just spending 300.00 for a wrong diagnosis, I am not eager to take her back to that vet. Can you help?

Black, tarry stools can be an indication of a bleed high up in the digestive tract. This is more dangerous than seeing bright red blood in the stool.

I think that you need to return to the vet to find out what is going on. The vet might decide to scope the throat to rule out an ulcer or other problem that might be the culprit.

I can understand why you are hesitant about returning to the vet but I really think that it's necessary.

Let me know if you still have specific questions. I would be happy to tell you what I know.
