Our hamster has bulging, seeping eyes and he has loose bowels. What could be the problem. There has been no change in bedding or food. I appreciate your time.

Dear Sheila, thankyou for your question.

From your description your hamster is really sick and needs a veterinarian as soon as possible. It will help to look for an emergency vet that is open or call tomorrow first thing and ask around to see who does see hamsters.

I am giving you a website(below) which will not only help you identify what's possibly wrong but also some help in treating your hamster until you can get him to a vet.

If you have other hamsters it's best to keep him seperated.

Also when washing his eyes try to remember not to use the same washcloth from one eye to the other. (I realize this is probably too late this time but perhaps it will be of use in the future) Just as you would not use the same rag from cleaning the tail for the eyes.

You will find out some of the causes for these types of problems but it is still important to see a vet since an antibiotic may be very much needed to have successful treatment. Hamsterific Hamster Illness Guide for Hamsters
