Question

My daughter's hamster is about 2 1/2 years old

Sent to Pet Experts May 11, 2006 6:16 p.m.

My daughter's hamster is about 2 1/2 years old (long haired). He has been acting funny. He is sleeping more, his back end seems swollen and he can't fit in his cage tubes like could before (can't get into one of them at all). When he squeezes through a tube, it's difficult and he squeaks. He is not taking care of his coat - it's messy and his back is wet. He was sleeping under his water bottle and didn't mind that he was getting wet. He's hard to wake up. He does seem to be eating some. We just him a raisin and carrot stick as I read it may be constipation - but I'm not sure. I'm also not sure if he is pooping. His testicles look much bigger to me. Any ideas about what we should do?

Optional Information:
Age: 2; Male; Breed: Hamster/long hair large

Already Tried:
raisin and carrot feeding. And just trying to make him comfortable.

Does his back end seem wet also...and possibly even his underside?

Is his back end red or irratated looking?

Any discharge from eyes or nose?

His back end does not seem wet. It's darker and larger though (blackish-blueish gray instead of his normal gray). And he may have a blackish area on the back end (anus) - although it would get like that periodically anyway. I can't get him out of the wheel right now to double check. But, his eyes have looked funny. One doesn't want to open and has crusted over a few times. He has been keeping them shut most of the time now. His back, right behind the ears to mid-back looks wet, but I guess it's dried and cripy now, and just looks wet.

Hi Karen,

It does sound like your hamster is constipated.

If he is still eating, feed him plenty of greens and vegetables. If he is not eating, or just to help him feel better faster, you can give him one drop of olive oil with an eye dropper.

For his eyes, wipe them with a damp, warm wash cloth. You may have to wipe them a few times before they will open. After that, you can put saline solution (the kind for contact lenses) in his eyes 3 times per day for a few days. If they continue to look red or irritated, you should take him to see a vet.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Susan
