Question

blood in urine

Sent to Pet Experts March 26, 2006 9:03 p.m.

I have a hamster that is a year and a half old. About 5 days ago, I noticed blood in his urine and he has been straining to go and has been drinking more than usual. He seems fine otherwise. I took him to a rodent expert vet 2 days ago and she gave him a shot (antibiotic ) and he is on Baytril oral susp. for 14 days. Yesterday, he had only one episode of no blood in his urine but today it's back again. She did check his belly and said there were no signs of swelling that she could feel and didn't think he had bladder stones. Does it take more than a few days so see an improvement in the bleeding? Does it sound like he has bladder stones? He is current eating a mixture (small amt. ) of commercial hamster food with seeds and he gets about 5 pieces a day of Regal Rat food, which was suggested to us by a previous vet. He is running in his wheel and jumping from his ramp to the bottom of the cage and doesn't seem like he is in any distress. Needless to say I'm a worried mother. Can you give me any insight on this problem? Thank you
CAF

Dear friend,
Your hamster has a bladder or kidney infection. Antibiotics are the proper way to treat it, however, it can take several days before you see improvement.
In the meantime: You must keep the little guy VERY warm. If he is cold he is not going to get well. Also make sure he ha a LOT of water as that is essential.
Make sure you clean the cage very well too or aspergillis fungus can develope in the spot your hamster urinates.
This condiions sometimes comes from a high fat diet as that causes his urine to become more alkaline.
If he is not better in a few days you willl need to take him back to the vet.
Please let me know if you have any more questions or need any additional help with your dear little hamster.
Warmest wishes,
Terri

Does that Regal Rat food contain alot of fat? Should I put him back on that commercial seeded hamster food? If he is not better in a few days, what do you think they will do for him? Change his antibiotic? He has Carefresh bedding in his cage and in his cubby where he sleeps and unfortunately urinates. I don't want to cover it with a towel because it won't allow the space to breath and the moisture will collect. How do you suggest keeping him warm and how do I know if he's not warm enough? Is CareFresh a bedding that is good for hamsters? Does Care Fresh promote fungus?
Do you think it's a good idea that he runs in his wheel, or would rest be better for him.

It is a good idea that he runs in the wheel as that will keep him warm and stimulated.
Try to change the bedding in the spot he urinates right after he goes.
If it is very cool in his room, cover the cage with a towel to insulate it just for the night.
Care fresh is fine for bedding.
Put him back on his commercial seeded hamster food and just use the regal food once or twice a week.
He should be fine in a couple of days but if he isn't he may need his antibiotic changed or the dosage adjusted.

If he isn't better in a few days, what more can they do for him, change his antibiotic? We use Care Fresh bedding in his cage and cubby (where unfortunately he urinates). Is that bedding good for preventing the fungus? Does the Regal Rat food that he is eating have too much fat? Should I switch him back to the commercial hamster food with seeds. How do I make sure he is warm enough? I don't want to cover his cubby with a towel because the moisture will collect from his urinating and it will become damp. Is exercise good for him or should I take out his wheel so he rests.   He is drinking from his water bottle, should I used filtered water from my refrigerator (at room temp. of course). I'm still confused as to how he can urinate yesterday (it falls out of his wheel) and it had no blood visible and he was passing blood again today.
