Question

My hamster got its right paw (the middle two finger tips) ...

Sent to Pet Experts March 04, 2006 12:49 a.m.

My hamster got its right paw (the middle two finger tips) caught when I snapped a tube back on the cage after cleaning the cages out. (she tried running into the tube right as I was snapping it back on) They blead a little bit but aren't anymore, but she's favoring that paw, and I can't see her middle nail (either I just can't see it because she doesnt stay still long enough, or it's not there). Is there anything i can do to help her or make sure it doesn't get infected? I know it has to hurt, and I want to do anything I can to help her out, I feel so bad...

Optional Information:
Age: <1; Female; Breed: med/long haired Syrian hamster

nothing, I don't know what to do

I know you feel bad, but remember, it was an accident, and she'll get better.

Take some saline solution (like the kind you put on contact lenses) or some hydrogen peroxide and rinse her paw well. Pat it dry with a towel, and then coat it with antibiotic ointment like neosporin. Keep an eye on it over the next few days and make sure it doesn't look like it's getting infected. If it becomes infected, it will get very swollen, and an abcess might form. If it does get infected, take her to a vet for antibiotics.

Hopefully she'll do fine with the home treatment and be better in a few days.

Thank you so much! Now for the hard part...getting her to stay still long enough to rinse her paw!
