Are dandelions toxic or safe for your guinea pig
Sent to Pet Experts May 07 12:12 PM

I have a yard full of dandelions and I got a nifty new weed puller, and I was wondering if I could give some (how much) to my guineapigs. I have 2 pigs about 3-4 years old. Thank- you very much.

Hi,

Dandelions are safe for guinea pigs as long as you haven't treated your lawn with any kind of chemical, such as fertilizer, weed killer, etc.

Cut off the roots, rinse the dandelions well, and offer just a couple to your guinea pigs at first so they can get used to them. Gradually increase the amount over a few days, so that between the two of them they can have about a handful.

Keep an eye on them to make sure their poops are still normal and not soft, wet or unformed. If this happens, stop the dandelions, wait a few days until your guinea pigs' poops are back to normal, and then reintroduce the dandelions at a slower rate and give them less.

Sometimes with a new food or a seasonal food, a guinea pig will overindulge if she likes it a lot, and this will lead to mild diarrhea or poorly formed poop.

In addition to the dandelions, continue to feed your guinea pigs some other veggies, and make sure they always have guinea pig pellets and timothy hay available.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Susan
