I just bought a guinea pig yesterday, and i want to know what do I need to do to earn it's trust.

Already Tried:
I tried petting it and pitting it up. When i try to pet it , it will run away from me then after awhile it will stay still. I picked it up once and it hopped out off my arms. I do not know what to do.
