Small rodents can be hard to "sex", especially when young.
It is easiest to decide gender when comparing different individuals to each other.
Since males have to have room for the scrotum to develop, the openings for urine and stool have some distance between them. If a mature male is held so that the nose faces up and the tail down, you can often see the testicles as small bumps between the opening for the penis and the anus.
Females have little (or may seem to have no) distance between the openings for urine and stool...they also have better definition to the nipples along the underside.
