Gerbil Question
Sent to Pet Experts March 25 09:32 PM

We have a 15 month old male gerbil - Roger. About 3 weeks ago we discovered an injury on his left cheek. It looked like some of his skin was ripped open like a flap (due to fight with cage mate or something else, we don''t know) and it was red and bleeding underneath. The skin flap fell off after a day or so, but the wound isn''t healing. In fact it seems to be bulging outward and is still red and raw. Otherwise he seems fine - eats, drinks, runs on wheel, grooms himself, sleeps with cage mate (his brother). Is it a tumor? Should he be separated from his cage mate? Is there a way to help him or should we prepare for the worst?

Hello,

I would separate the two Gerbils. To treat Roger you need to use some plain soap and water, then treat wilth Betadine and last Neosporin. Repeat this procedure about 4 x's a day. Make sure the bedding is kept clean and you are using something like carefresh which will not irritate the situation. This should start to heal once the two Gerbils are separated, since Barbering and biting is very typical with siblings. Joan
