My goldfish is lying at the bottom of the tank....
Sent to Pet Experts February 10 07:05 PM

I have had one Goldfish for about 8 months and he has always been fine. This morning when I got up and turned his light on he was lying on the bottom of the tank but began to move around normally and ate. About an hour later I notied he was doing the same thing but when i got close to the tank he would move around and look at me (he is very social). But he continues to lie at the bottom of the tank when left alone. What can I do and what is causing this?

I have recently had an unusually amount of alge growth in my tank and have been doing weekly water changes. I had inuired about this on other websites and was told that alge should not be a problem to the fishes health. Do you agree or do you think that this may be part of the problem?

Algae in itself is not a threat to a fish's health but its mere presence is usually an indication that there is a water quality problem.

Algae appears when there is an abundance of natural sunlight or aquarium lighting which does not indicate a water problem but if neither of the above are present then algae grows due to an abundance of nitrates which can rise to a dangerously high level because of excessive feeding and as a result: excess fish waste.

So logically if we take away the variable, excessive light, then the algae bloom directly points to a water problem related to a high nitrate level which in turn can slowly affect a fish's good health. That is why I recommend a thorough testing of the water.
