how can i tell if my pleco is sick...its color looks pail

is he eating? swimming normally at the bottom or is he at the top? How is his gilling? Rapid...looks like he's pumping hard to push water thru? Have you changed anything in the tank? Any filter? ANy new fish added recently? What are the water parameters? Ammonia, Nitrite? pH?
