Question

gold fish float on right side and listless

Sent to Pet Experts January 09, 2006 11:51 p.m.

Ammonia .5
Nitrite 0
Nitrate- 40 -ish
PH 6.2
Ph in tap 7
10 gallons-running for 6 months
Filtration -1 hang on back filter, 1 in tank filter
Weekly water change between 15-25% (we changed the water on the past saturday)
2 fish in the tank
Tap water conditioner before water change (to new water)

Removed one obviously sick fish to the hospital tank
Symptoms--listless, floating, obvious white spots one the edge of the of tail, eyes look cloudy. fish looks almost dead. The sicker one seems have bloody spots on its tail as well. (he is a black + Red + white)

White spots seemed like ich--treated main tank with ich cure.
Also treated main tank with anti-bacterial as precaution.

Fish remaining in regular tank seems better thatn the other, but is exhibiting some symptoms. Tail seems to almost have an "edge" of white dots. floating a bit, but not really as 'dead' looking as the other. Fish in main tank staying close to surface of water.
Both fish are on their right sides now. (after the treament list below, the sicker one is still listless, the other one looks more balanced, but he likes to point his face down and tail up and stay like that for a while. he is pearl scales, so has big belly)

We accidentally did not run aeration in the tank yesterday and are wondering if that contributed. We do have plenty plants but also the tank was in a nice ligted area, ... lacking of oxg should not be a problem, but not sure

It's hard to tell what's going on.

We had an outbreak of ich about a month back that seemed to be treated succesfully, could this be a recurrence?

We also seem to have had a ph crash at some point, which we certainly assume to contribute to the problem. We have also tried to remedy that by bringing up the ph with a bit of baking soda.

Ph now is in the 7's.

We are very confused about what the cause is of all this and are not sure what next steps to take.

Perfect on Saturday. We were not at home on Sunday. Found the problem tonight.
Please advise.

Thanks so much.

Not sure of your ammonia test but it sounds pretty high. I would do a 30% water change every day til it reads 0. Next, I would try getting the water quality back before treating with anything else. The pH crash + the ammonia spike could have triggered the ich again so I would go ahead an treat though only treat for 1 thing at a time. If they are eating, and the floating looks more like a bouyancy issue, I would try feeding a few crushed pea's. Not sure why it works but it does...some think it helps get the air bubble moving but there's no real proof, just that it does work. The main thing is water quality.
