Itching & Scratching
Sent to Pet Experts June 08 10:15 AM

I have a 13 year old dog, she is for the most part a house dog. She weighs 46 pounds and has medium length hair. She is a mix breed of Spits, wolf and other. She is on Science Diet for seniors. She is on advantage for fleas.

She has been taking thyroxin for about 3 months now. Her hair started falling out and her skin had black oily spots all over it. After taking thyroxin she cleared up within a week. My vet said she would probably have to be on this for the rest of her life.

In the last 3 weeks she has been miserable with itching & scratching. I bath her with a medicated shampoo I got from the vet. Her skin is not scaly. Her vet gave her a cortisone shot about 2 weeks ago. That really didn't work. I took her back yesterday and he checked her over again. He didn't find fleas and he didn't see signs of mites. He said we would try predisone and to give it to her every other day so maybe that would give her some relief. He also gave her omega fatty acid capsules to give her each day also.
So far she is still scratching. Have I not given the predisone enough time to work? Do you have any other suggestion? I feel really bad because I don't know what else to do for her.
