Miniature Dachshund

Sent to Pet Experts June 05, 2005 12:31 a.m.

I have a 5 year old miniature dachshund, we have spent over $2000 and two different vets and noone knows how to help us. She has lost weight, losing hair, vomiting, and has skin problems on her , ears, around eyes, and her paws.

This sounds like an autoimmune disease or a serious allergy perhaps to a food.
Some people find that they can help a pet a lot by using a premium or home cooked food that contains human grade ingredients and is lacking the things dogs are commonly allergic to.
Foods such as Wellness Fish and Potato, California Natural, Blue Buffalo and others have helped some dogs with problems such as you describe.
Others found that swapping to a raw diet called BARF for Bones And Raw Food helped their pet a lot. You need to research to do this diet properly and there are email lists on yahoogroups.com and many books out on the topic.
Some dogs are bothered by preservatives and dyes in foods and some by particular proteins etc.
Many of the vet skin diets still have allergens in them and preservatives too which is why I'm suggesting non vet supplied diets.
This site lets you compare dog foods to see the ingredients in them

Some dogs also respond well to Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids being added to their diets and some need extra zinc - products such as Derm Caps with zinc or Lipaderm with Zinc might be useful to use as a supplement to whatever you are feeding.
Sebaceous Adenitis is a hereditary skin disease that occurs primarily in Standard Poodles and Akitas, but has also been reported in a number of other breeds, including the Dachshund. You can read an article on this problem here

Seborrhea is another skin disease known in the breed and you can read about it here
http://www.upei.ca/~cidd/Diseases/dermatology/seborrhea.htm
You can read about food allergies here

Hope this helps you!
