Karen, I'm sorry about the delay but with this being a world wide site and all the different time zones, we are not all on here, reviewing the questions all the time. You didn't say whether your birds are in an outside aviary or not. The reason I asked is that it is almost impossible for inside birds, who never have any exposure to the outside birds or to any surface where outside birds may have been, to have mites. It just doesn't happen. Even if it should be mites, I don't believe you would be seeing this kind of symptoms. What you describe sounds much more like some kind of illness, (of which there are several) and/or exposure to some kind of toxin. Whatever you do, do not try to treat him with any kind of spray or other over the counter product unless you can get a firm diagnosis of mites from a good avian vet. Don't put a lot of stock in pet store employees either unless you have a long string of references for them and their level of expertise. The difficulty with the flying and the balance problems could be illness or poisoning. I would urge you to get him to a well qualified avian vet and not waste time with pet store employees. There are also a lot of other things that should be in a Finche's diet so in addition to giving you some links to help locate a proper vet, I'm going to give you some to Finch diet. The articles may not refer to your exact type of Finch the the diet basics are the same. I hope this will be helpful but if you have further questions, just let me know. Patricia
