Question

Ferrett Rash

Sent to Pet Experts December 11, 2004 10:57 a.m.

My ferrett seems to have a what apperars to be a diaper rash on her hind legs. We believe that she stopped using her litterbox around Monday or Tuesday and went in her bed. She then would lay in it. When I took her out of her cage last night to take her a bath her hind legs were raw. We then found that she had not been using her litterbox. Do I need to take her in right away to get this checked out or can I buy some ointment for rashed and take her in on Monday?

I want to make sure I understand  - are you saying there is no evidence of her peeing/pooping these last few days?  Or she has diarrhea and that is what has caused the irritation?

We found poop in her bed, The last time we cleaned her litterbox was Wednessday, and there is nothing in the litterbox. It was in her bed. It appears that she has been laying in her poop, which has stuck to her fur and skin. We thought she was constipated until last night.

What is her overall behavior like?  Is she eating/drinking/playing, etc?

Do not use any ointment on the rash because she will groom herself and ingest it. I would clean the area gently with a mild soap and water. A vet visit would be a good idea because if she's reluctant to use her liltter pan or possible trying to become constipated, it can become serious by Monday. You need to find the unlying reason and your vet will be able to do that for you.

Her behavior is basically the same. On Thursday evening she was restless and moving things around her cage all night. She was also yanking on her cage all night as if she wanted to get out. When I opened the cage she would not come out. On Friday when I let her out for her evening playtime, she was fine. I did not notice the rash until I went to take her a bath. I then noticed that her heart was racing, about 150 bpm, and she was not fighting me. She usually tries to get away when I bathe her. Upon closer inspection I noticed that she had a rash on her hind legs. Other than being upset with us on Thursday, she has been her usual self. We assume she is upset because I have not been able to let her out of her cage in the mornings like I have done for the past year. When my husband goes to work, I let her out of her cage to play until I get dressed for work. I have not been able to do this for the past week due to car trouble. We do let her out in the evening. The only thing that we noticed is that there was no poop in her litterbox from Wednessday on.

Her overall behavior is pretty much the same. The exception is Thursday evening. She was quite restless all night. She was moving things around her cage all night, and she was pulling on her cage like she wanted to get out. When I opened the cage to let her out she would not come out. On Friday when I let her out for her evening play time she was fine. I did not notice anything until I went to take her a bath. I initially noticed that her heart was racing, about 150bpm. I then noticed that she was not fighting me. It is usually I fight that I end up loosing to take her a bath. I inspected her and then noticed that there was a rash on her hind legs. My husband and I assume she is upset with me because I have not been able to let her out of her cage every morning like I have for the past year. Previously, when my husband would leave for work, I would let her out of her cage to play while I got ready for work. Due to car problems my husband and I have been carpooling. I have not had the time in the mornings to let her out of her cage. Other than Thursday she has been her same old self. She still eats her regular amount and she still plays.

Well, first, ferrets can get tummy upsets just like the rest of us.  And at times, that does have to do with  a change in their daily routine - so maybe the change in you not letting her out in the a.m. could have something to do with it.  However, I would not let it go at that.  I would schedule a vet appt Monday and get her in for an exam. (taking a fresh stool sample to the vet always helps too!).  Meanwhile, if her symptoms or behavior show additional sighs of illness, call an emergency vet.  She's eating and that's great - and playing too.  Good signs always!

A bland diet of baby chicken food may help settle her stomach. I hope all turns out well - wish you the best of luck and let us know if we can do anything else!
