my cockatiel has developed a growth on his left wing that

my bird has developed a growth on his left wing that has continued to get progressively worse. He never had any problems like this before. I know in order for it to have a chance to heal he must''''''''nt be able to pick at it, which he is constantly doing now (except when sleeping). Any idea on what my bird is suffering from?
