Question

My cockateil has laid 4 eggs. Her mate has recently died.

My cockateil has laid 4 eggs. Her mate has recently died. How do I know if the eggs are fertile? I haven't touched the eggs. I need to clean the cage. She seems to be protective of one of the eggs, ignoring the rest. Suggestions?

Does she have a nesting box? I would suggest getting a nesting box and letting her sit on the eggs and waiting to see if they'll hatch, it's hard to know if they're fertile or not until they've been sitting on them for a while.

There is not a nesting box. The eggs are at the bottom of the cage. A bright light reveals yellow in the eggs but no red lining to confirm fertility. It has been only a few weeks. The cage needs to be cleaned.

If there's no red lining after a couple of seeks, I'd doubt the eggs are fertile. Will she let you remove her from the cage? If so, try getting her out of the cage away from the eggs so she doesn't see you remove them. Be careful to throw them away outside, if they break it'll be pretty smelly!
