(Not a Pet Question?)

My cockatiel just got into some chocolate. What should I do

Sent to Pet Experts March 04 11:08 PM

My 3 yo son put a KitKat bar into the cage and the two cockatiels seem to have eaten a little bit. Maybe 1/2 teaspoon total. What should I do?

Age: 2; Male; Breed: Cockatiel

ZooCVT:hello
Customer (name blocked for privacy):It was actually 2 birds
Customer (name blocked for privacy):and I don't know which one or both ate the candy
ZooCVT:chocolate can be very toxic to your birds and I would get them into a vet tonight
Customer (name blocked for privacy):Even that small amount?
Customer (name blocked for privacy):Do I need a special vet?
ZooCVT:If it was a dog, you could make them vomit but with birds its a bit more difficult
ZooCVT:yes even a small amount
Customer (name blocked for privacy):What can the vet do?
ZooCVT:being you aren't sure how much they got for sure there's no reason to take a chance
Customer (name blocked for privacy):about 1/2 teaspoon total
Customer (name blocked for privacy):but...which bird or both I don't know
ZooCVT:a vet can either do a crop wash or possibly give something to counteract the effects
ZooCVT:thats an awful lot for something thats only 100 grams tops
Customer (name blocked for privacy):animal emergency room?
ZooCVT:yes I would do it immediately
Customer (name blocked for privacy):okay
Customer (name blocked for privacy):thank you
ZooCVT:good luck and keep them covered for the trip!
Customer (name blocked for privacy):Okay
Customer (name blocked for privacy):Thank you again
