(Not a Pet Question?)

hedgehogs

Sent to Pet Experts December 21 06:31 PM

I have 2 African pygmy hedgehogs (approximately 2 1/2 years old) that I have mated twice. The first litter (last winter) contained 4 babies, 2 of which she ate. The remaining two (males) are healthy. This winter, she had another litter of at least 3. She has eaten all of them. I have her in her own pen in a quiet, well ventilated, dark space. She is not bothered by anyone, and I removed the male when she gave birth. What is the evolutionary reason for eating ones young? How can I prevent this in the future. I would like to breed her once more.
