Question

Death

Sent to Pet Experts December 20, 2004 3:03 p.m.

my two dogs have died from the same mystery illness within 3 weeks of each other. both whining, foaming at the mouth and heavy vomitting. We think that they may have been poisoned. Are these symptoms consistant with being poisoned or could there be something are are overlooking.

Poisoning is always a possibility, although so are many other things. If your dogs are contained in a fenced yard, and if they are kept current on vaccinations, and if they both had the same symptoms followed by death, it does sound suspicious. However, there are things dogs can get into (toxic mushrooms, spoiled food) that are not intentional toxins as well. Also, if you have a wooded area, check it very carefully. Sometimes dogs unearth toxic things that have been buried for a long time.   Pesticides can still be toxic after a long time, and many of these can cause symptoms similar to what you noticed. Antifreeze can also cause vomiting, but oftentimes there are other signs too (neurologic, coma, etc. There are just so many things out there. Do you have a good relationship with your neighbors? Sometimes people do throw harmful things over the fence, esp. if your dogs tend to bark a lot. Don't be too quick to be suspicious, but do be careful if you get another pet. Best of luck...

My main concern is that I have two more dogs. They were all locked up and confined to a back yard. They did not have access to any poisons as we don't have any on our property and we live in a suburb of a major city, so woodlands are not a issue. I would hate to think that my animals are being poisoned by a neighbor, but if they are I want to make sure that the police are aware. I thank you for your help.
