Use of Capstar and Program with Heartgard
Sent to Pet Experts August 16 11:21 AM

I have 2 dogs. One is 2 years old and weighs 6 pounds (long haired chihuahua). The other is 4 years old and weighs 18 pounds (Japanese Spitz). They are currently infested with fleas. I just purchased Capstar for both of them to get rid of adult fleas as well as Program (lufenuron) flavor tabs (per their individual body weights) to stop the life cycle of the fleas. I read that it is safe to use them together. I have two questions. Do I need to do anything special when using both medicines together, i.e. a different dose. And are these products safe to use along with Heartgard as a heartworm preventative? Or should I switch to a different heartworm preventative and if so, which one?

Thanks!

Reply to Tammy's Post: Hi Tammy,

Thanks for your prompt reply. This is the second year the dogs have gotten fleas from boarding them. They got fleas despite the use of Frontline before and after boarding. I've tried everything and I can't get rid of them. Last year we finally had to have an exterminator come twice. I'd like to avoid that if possible. Poor Gypsy is miserable, she has flea allergy dermatitis and is getting sores all over her skin. The last medicine we gave them was Advantage about 4 weeks ago. It did no good and I've been waiting out the 4 weeks so we can try something else. Frontline hasn't helped much either. And Advantix has done nothing to help. Several people recommended the Capstar and I read on their site (Novartis) that it was recommended for use with Program. I ordered both and they are scheduled to be delivered tomorrow. But I was worried about their interraction with Heartgard.

If you have any other solutions I'd love to hear them.

Thanks!
Elise

Elise,

You didn't give the Advantage enough time. It really will work, if you will follow the information I gave you above in the post.

It takes about 2 months. I know it's hard...and you want to get rid of them right away, but "overkill" won't help. Just be patient and use the Advantage as directed and you will be flea free.

In the meantine, if you have problems with fleas jumping on you, use a product from AVON, "Skin so soft" and it will keep them off.
