What drug is used to put animals to sleep?

A friend took her 6 week old puppy to a vet in town, who gave the dog a shot of something that begins with a "b". She was told it was given this by mistake and it was the wrong dosage for her dog that only weighed 2.5 lbs. I'm trying to determine what drug the pet was given because the dog died 3 hrs. later.

This is really a hard mistake to make...

How was this injection given?

What was the pet there for?

A very small injection to a 2.5lb dog is all it would take?

What color was the solution injected?

Can you answer these questions for me?
