Question

Dental Infection in my 14 yr old Corgie

Sent to Pet Experts September 04, 2005 3:55 p.m.

My dog has an on-going dental problem where his gums swell up badly. He has had six teeth removed, but he still ends up going back to go under anesthesia and antibiotic for infection that continues to creep up. He is a 14 year old corgie. He is in pain right now and although I can't afford it, I will have to pay other bills late because his vet bill will be $281.00 again for the 3rd time. I will do what ever it takes, but can I give him something for pain right now? I tried benadryl, but that had him up all night pacing the house. Any advice at all would be helpful and sincerely appreciated. Jeanne Myers Customer (name blocked for privacy)@yahoo.com

Jeanne,
Without knowing your dog's full history, I'm hesitant to recommend a pain medication. You can call your vet and ask for a dose for an over-the-counter pain medication. If that is not indicated in your situation, ask about Tramadol - its a new drug similar to an opiod that is gentle on old animals and should not cause stomach upset. Its less expensive than opiods, but they may have to call in a rx to a human pharmacy.
There are soothing gels (CET)to help make gums feel better. You could also try ice in his water and soaking food in tepid water to soften it.
Sometimes it is worth the extra money (and can save in the long run) to see a boarded vet dentist in your area. There may be a reason this keeps happening. Best of luck, Dr. Meg
