I would like to be able to put my cat to sleep at home. It is going to be a very traumatizing experience. Can this be done?

Call your vet and ask. Many vets will do a home visit to limit trauma to the pet.
If your vet will not ask if they know one that will make housecalls.
You shouldn't try it on your own - the best and most humane meds to do this are all highly controlled and other methods will be more traumatic than you would care for or may be illegal.
Hope this helps you!.

Reply to Nancy Holmes's Post: I should probably give you a little more background. She is an old cat - probably around 16. She was a stray and has been an exceptional companion. She has a mammary gland tumor that the vet has told me is inoperable given her age and her other health problems. She suffers from hyperthyroidism and is currently on medication. And on her last visit to the vet, he felt that her kidneys were slightly enlarged. I have had numerous blood workups done and the last results were not encouraging. I'm not sure if I should take her off her medication and see what happens or continue her current treatment. She also had some neurological issues last summer which seem to have resolved themselves. At one point he thought she might have a brain tumor but the xrays were inclusive. My vet suggested subcutaneous fluids if her kidneys got bad. I definitely don't want her to suffer by trying to prolong the inevitable. I would never try something on my own. I just wondered if it had been done before. She hates the vet as I'm sure most animals do. I want her to be in comfortable surroundings where she feels most comfortable. I'm just kindof waiting for a sign for her when it's the right time. Thanks for your response.
