(Not a Pet Question?)

rabies

would a porcupine that tried to claw its way into my house be considered rabid? It tried to get into the glass door then went to the windows and clawed at them. My GSP had about 30 quills in her nose, I removed them, called the health dept. and they said not to worry, but I am still worried as I and my 12 year old daughter were exposed.

In theory, rabies can exist in any warm blooded animal. The truth of it is there are lots of animals exposed that have never been documented with rabies. For example, we know foxes, raccoons and bats...then of course dogs/cats. There are no cases with it in rodentia type animals...like possums and I can't find any in porcupines.

You may want to call the state vet, not the health board, and he/she can give you numbers (animals  positive for rabies)for NY but it doesn't sound like an exposure issue.

Let me know if you have more questions.
