unusual neutering proceedure?

Sent to Pet Experts February 17 2005 at 3:25 PM

My 6 month old cairn terrier just had nuertering surgery. The vet could not find his testicles (found 1/2 of one) he now has 4 incisions on his body, and the vet says he will need further surgery in about 6 months. Is this normal? What are the risks for his health in the future?

Reply to ZooCVT's Post: They found "1/2" a testicle. I think they are saying that he may grow one in the next 6 months, therefore the need for additional surgery. Isn't there another way of finding out without further surgery?

Reply to ZooCVT's Post: Yes, they removed what they said was 1/2 of a testicle, that was all they found! He has stiches on his abdomen, in front of his penis, and one on each side of where the scrotum should have been. They also told me that he would need additional surgery in about 6 months to see if he has any grown in during that time!

I have a really hard time believing that they found "half" a testicle...maybe an under developed but not 1/2 of one. I owuld get a second opinion when you go in for the second surgery. In my 22 years of vet teching...I have never seen a 1/2 testicle so thats why is sounds suspicious...Where in AZ are you and maybe I can recommend someone?

Reply to ZooCVT's Post: I think what they meant was that it was the size of 1/2 of a normal size testicle. In their terms, they do not consider him neutered at this point. I am in Casa Grande.

The odds of it dropping are very unlikely and being they fished around for ir they way they did would make me reluctant to return to them. I know quite a few very good vets in the Phoenix area but not as far out as Casa Grande...Scottsdale also. If you like, I can refer you to them .
