Question

Skin disorder in a Rottweiler pup

Sent to Pet Experts October 12, 2004 11:57 a.m.

I have an opportunity to add a young Rottweiler pup to my home. I am concerned because the pup has a type of skin disorder around his snout. The best way I can decribe it would be scaly with small bumps and no hair. Can you tell me what this could be, or direct me to someone who could? I realize that you are unable to give a diagnosis without seeing him, but should I be concerned? Thank you in advance for your prompt reply!

I would not purchase or bring into your home any animal prior to a full veterinary exam. People don't want to pay a vet for a "normal animal/puppy" but we can end up saving them hundreds by finding the problem before it is in your house.
For example, this may just be bacterial, but it can be fungal like ringworm and contaminate you, your family, and your animals...and house.
It can be a noncontagious for of mange that is immunerelated so the animal goes on medications for 3 months and you run the risk of outbreaks, plus this is not a dog to be bred.
So...I would make the appointment first, I promise it is well worth the $ up front!
