I had a 3 month old heifer, approximately 150 lbs, get stuck in a pond 3 days ago. The tempature was around 100 degrees. I don't know how long she was stuck. I got her out and started her on antibiotics and electralites. I've been keeping her shaded and have a fan on her most of the time. She will get up and graze on the grass. She drinks water. Her feces is thick and she is urinating. Her nose is wet, but she is tearing from her eyes. I know she was worn out and is still terribly sore from her ordeal. Should I bring her momma to be with her? How long should I expect her take to recover? What else can I do for her? Thank you.

Hi! Keep her hydrated and eating. Bring any animal around her that will keep her calm. Take a towel, and rub her all over. Pick up her feet and stretch out her legs, slowly and gently. Stop if she protests. Stand in front of her and gently hold her chin. Talk to her, give her a treat, turn her head slowly left and right. Rub her shoulders up to her head and back. You need to stimulate her to get the feeling back into her. Walk her. Then rub her spine. Massage her hips, above her above the tail and flanks. Gently but with pressure. Then, take, both hands, and stand in front of her and rub her throat gently , her poll and face. Massage her chin and cheeks. You have to reduce the emotional trauma, and her knowing you care, keep speaking to her, kindly and gently will bring her around. Use your "horse"sense. You will know and feel her body respond. This will take some time. You don't have to do it all at once, but please be gentle. This does work. I have done this horses that have been beaten down emotionally, and they respond unreal. If you have ANY other questions, please ask me. I want to help you.
