We just adopted a 3yr ol Rootweilder from the Animal Control Center. Since wh have had him, he has been very sick, (e.g-breathing short, lack of appettite, hacking/wretching cough w/o sputum production, increased reddened eyes, and us constantly drooling large amount of mucus from the side of his mouth. We took hinm to the vet and was told that he has a virus that has to run its course; and that he also has pneumonia. The vet prescribed 300mg of Zeniquin to be taken 1x per day every 24 hrs for 10 days.
We have given it to him but the dog, he started showing small signs of improvement, then this morning, it seem like he had a relapse to the same inital symptoms that caused us to take him to the vet.
What should we do? Should we return him back to the shelter (we have grown so attached to him within this 1st week that we have had him) or ar they any other alternative medicines/foods that can be used to assist him in getting better. Also, what nutritional vitamins can be given to him now in helping to get better?

Optional Information:
Age: 3; Male; Breed: mixed rottweiler

Already Tried:
We have tried chicken soup with pieces of chicken and rice, he eat a good amount the the 1st day, then his appetite decreased. we've tried to give him lots of water, there are times when he would drink a lot, now he takes about 2-3laps of it. We have tried given him chicken/beef broths-to no avail. We have used morsels of chicken sausages and small pieces of cooked meats-he just smells it 1st, then he'll eat one piece and no more.

He may have the canine flu and he probably picked it up at the shelter. It takes longer to get over than kennel cough which is a milder virus.

You can see if Tamflu will help him shake the viral infection that led to the bacterial pneumonia. Pneumonia takes a good three weeks to get over.

You may find bringing him in a steamy bathroom will help his breathing or running a vaporizer with just plain water in it may help.
You can see if some NutriCal will help perk up appetite as its very nutritious and full of vitamins and minerals. You can put it right in his mouth.
Based on what I've seen of shelters it is likely they will just euthanize him if you return him as they seldom have the resources to pay for medical care for dogs and they would not want him to make other dogs sick too.
You can boil some chicken meat and see if he will drink the broth and maybe eat some chicken if he is off his food. You can warm up his food so its more aromatic as if he can't smell the food he won't eat it.
I would suggest seeing the vet again or at least asking about using Tamiflu to work on the virus part of his infection.
Hope this helps you!
