seizures in labs

Sent to Pet Experts February 03 07:48 PM

I have a 5 year old yellow lab, female, who has had two litters. The bloodlines are field trial champion and both grandfathers have sired hundreds of pups. Both litters have the same parents. In the first litter, two dogs have had to be put down due to seizures. The second litter is only 1 and 1/2 years old now. I have two little females from this second litter. Our intention was to breed occassionally, as we just love the whole puppy experience. Also, we were always very proud to be putting "good" pups out there. I was heartbroken to hear about the first dogs problems with seizures, and then when I heard about the second I had to really re-evaluate whether we should breed again. I know that labs are a breed that has seizure problems. In all my research on the lines I can not find any other problems in the parents or grandparents. Do you think I should spay all three of my girls?

I was fairly certain that that would be the reply. And I agree. I would never want another family to go through this. For my peace of mind, can you help me understand why the family history can look so good and then all of the sudden there is a seizure. Can vaccinations or other environmental things be causing this? This is just so out of the blue. I am sure that we will spay them, but I am concerned because I do have two full siblings that I need to worry about and take precautions if I can. What can I do for them and any further information that might help me raise them happy and healthy.
