I have an 11 year old cock-a-poo, He has developed cateracs (not sure of spelling) this past year and it's very sad to see him this way, bumping into things and he's so timid now, he used to be very energetic and playful. I want someone to please explain to me the procedure of removing cateracs on a dog, if it's possible and how much it may cost to have the surgery performed. This animal deserves it, please help.

Firstly I wish you and your dog the best.

The procedures and equipment used to remove cataracts in dogs are the same as those used in humans. A small incision is made in the eye and a hole is made in the capsular bag that holds the lens. A special probe ultrasonically emulsifies and removes the cataract. After the entire lens is removed, an artificial replacement lens, called an intraocular lens is placed in the bag. The eye is closed with extremely small sutures. If both eyes are affected, usually both eyes are operated on at the same time.

The dog will see almost as well as before.

My own research has found the cost per eye to be anywhere from $800 to $4000. You should consult your vet as costs vary depending on area.

Thank you very much for that info, I appreciate alot... I just want to ask quickly something I forgot to add to my original question post:

Is there a risk of the operation failing and leaving him completely blind and if the procedure is a success I've heard that there is no garuntee that the cateracs won't come back.. is that true?

I am not sure about the success rate. I understand it to be high. You should consult your vet.

If the cataracts are removed, they cannot come back. The lens has been removed. Cataracts form in the lens.

I hope that helps. Again, I wish you and your pooch the best.
