Question

Rubberbanding Rabbits

Sent to Pet Experts July 09, 2005 11:12 p.m.

I rubberbanded our rabbit on thursday afternoon and his testicles have swollen a bit and one is red and one is natural colored. is this normal? do I need to cut open the sack to drain the hydrocele? or do I leave it alone?

REPLIED Check Mark

This is a very unhealthy practice. What often happens when you do this is that the blood flow is restricted to the area, the testicles will fall off as a result but infection usually sets in and this can kill the rabbit.

You need to remove the rubber band and see your vet to discuss your options.

Let me know if you still have questions.

I am trying to figure out what I can do at home. I am not going to spend $145 by going to a vet. The rabbit cost $16. I was raised on a farm and I am a surgical tech. If I cleanse his testicles with betadine, numb with 2% lidocaine jelly and poke a hole with a sterile #15 blade,to drain the fluid build up, will that relieve the pressure. And if his testicles dry up and fall off, how can they become infected? We rubberbanded sheep all the time & didn't have any problems.
